Mike Haysman recons beating Aus is critical

Mike Haysman from Supercricket :

Accidental Tourists..... by Mike Haysman

Posted on 15 March 2007

I can hear some alarm bells ringing. Can you? They are not yet clanging incessantly but they are leisurely gaining momentum and are soon preparing to chime in full volume.
When they eventually get their act together, the cacophony of noise could well be deafening but they are currently assembling in a stealthy fashion.

So why the alarm? Why am I so disturbed? It's simple. I feel that there is a team being lined up in the Group of Death. My trepidation is further enhanced by the fact that I believe that the sacrificial lamb in the Group of Death could well be South Africa.

Let's narrow things down.

Group A is my focus and, more specifically, the top two teams at the finishing post prior to the Super 8s commencing. Should South Africa qualify in slot A2 they have by far the biggest challenge. Conversely, should Australia nail that position they too will be tested.

The reason the road to the World Cup crown is compounded is summed up in one word. Guyana.

Team A2 will be banished to remote Guyana for the first three games and two weeks of the major round. There they will encounter stern opposition from either India or Sri Lanka, who will revel in the typically subcontinent style conditions, both on and off the park.

Andy Roberts, who has been one of the leading curators in the Caribbean for the last decade, is the resident Pitch Doctor for the 2007 World Cup. He recently amplified concern by stating that the pitch at the brand-new $25 million Providence Stadium in Guyana will be the surprise package.

He added nothing further .... but he had said enough.

In sharp contrast team A1 will savour the allround superior delights of Antigua for the same period of time and play on a track that Andy has nurtured like a fledgling for years.

Once Guyana has been interestingly negotiated by team A2 then another lesser centre in Granada awaits for an additional two essential and potentially cut-throat games.

Meanwhile, A1 will be firmly ensconsed in pleasurable Barbados.

So, coming second in group A is an accident waiting to happen.

It could also be a result that may equate eventually to a team of accidental tourists.

Not to mention false. No matter if SA win the group, or come second they willplay in Guyana. I stopped reading at that point.

From the ICC website:

http://www.icc-cricket.com/icc/events/w ... edule.html

"Team names for the Super Eight stage are indicative based on the top
two teams from the Group Stage qualifying. If these two teams do
qualify they will be seeded in position 1 or 2 as specified regardless
of whether they finish first or second in their group. For example, if
South Africa wins Group A and Australia comes second, for the purposes
of the Super Eights, South Africa will still be A2 and Australia will
be A1. If, for example, Scotland qualifies instead of Australia,
Scotland will become A1"
They float. They always flooaaatttt ....

And what is the "group of death". I've heard it refered to alternatively as Group A (Aus, SA, Canada, Scotland) and Group B (India, Sri Lanka, Bermuda, Bangladesh) ...

Seems to me the closest thing there is to a "group of death" in this tournament belongs to Ireland, Zim, Pakistan and West Indies....not sure the minnows in any other group stand a chance.

Ireland really is not a threat to anyone.
Yes, they beat Zim, but only because all the Zim guys were all hot and bothered about what Mugabe is up to right now.
